Canon conclusion:

The red plastic soldiers seem to play an interesting yet somewhat tragic role in the Army Men universe. They are often portrayed as victims, captured and used by their enemies, primarily the Tan Army. They’ve been subjected to experiments and transformations into spiders, suggesting that within the game’s narrative, they are seen as a vulnerable and oppressed group.

However, they also display courage and determination. Despite being prisoners, the red soldiers express gratitude and a desire for revenge against the Tans, as shown in their interactions with Hawk. This highlights a resilient and brave attitude in the face of adversity.

Their inclusion as a playable color in multiplayer modes reinforces their presence like the 5th nation in relevance in the game’s universe, allowing players to experience and represent this army.

In summary, the red plastic soldiers are an example of resistance and fighting spirit, facing significant challenges in a world dominated by Tan, Green, Blue and Grey color-based warfare. Their representation in the franchise provides a rich narrative hole full of potential for further exploration.
