Dangerous plastic eyes
The Tan Spotters were among the most peculiar and expendable specialists within the renegade armies of Lord Malice, the self-proclaimed warlord who fractured the Tan Nation during the events leading to Sarge’s War. Green Army’s records summarized them bluntly: “Though this Tan Trooper carries only a Carbine, the artillery and air strikes he calls in were lethal. When you saw a Spotter, you shot him—now!” That warning proved entirely accurate.
Although individually weak, a Spotter’s true importance lay in his ability to transmit precise strike coordinates to Malice’s artillery network. They rarely performed any task beyond that singular function. Because of their minimal equipment and the near-total absence of armor, they compensated with agility, evasiveness, and an uncanny talent for blending into terrain (even in open environments). Without those skills, they were practically gifts to the enemy; Lord Malice had invested almost nothing in their personal gear or survivability. Helmets, for example, were considered an “unnecessary luxury.”
Like most troops under Malice’s banner, Spotters carried Blue Army surplus, equipment obtained through Malice’s clandestine trade in stolen Army Men molds. In exchange for blue-cast replicas of the Green Nation’s heroes, Malice received crates of communication rigs, optics, and lightweight fatigues originally intended for Blue Army scouts. This strange mix of Tan loyalty and Blue equipment gave the Spotters their distinctive, mismatched appearance.
Hierarchically, the Tan Spotters stood just above the regular foot soldier within Malice’s renegade forces. Some of them had once been legitimate Tan communications specialists who defected to Malice early in his rebellion. However, many others had been molded from scratch: imperfect G1 bootlegs, cast quickly and cheaply to fill out Malice’s ranks. These bootleg Spotters often exhibited quirks in posture or articulation, yet their comms units worked well enough for Malice’s brutal purposes.
Despite their fragility, the Spotters had earned a fearsome battlefield reputation. Any troop who encountered them understood the danger: if a Spotter managed to relay coordinates uninterrupted, the resulting artillery or air strike was catastrophic. Their survival rate was low, but their utility to Malice’s war machine was undeniable. In many battles, a single surviving Spotter had been enough to tip the field into chaos.
In the end, the Tan Spotters embodied everything about Lord Malice’s renegade army: cheaply produced, dangerously unpredictable, and far more lethal than they first appeared.
