Army Men Dr. Madd

Dr. Madd

“(…) you… the esteemed Doctor… Why don’t you stop your dementic mutterings and give me something to squash the Green!. We must win this war!.” – Plastro to Dr. Madd during Air Tactics campaign

Dr. Madd was a notable former scientist from the Grey Nation, expelled from his nation by the Grey Army. after that he became Plastro’s Ally. His motivations were always unknown, and his voice is not known.

In the Army Men events he is usually behind multiple nefarious schemes, such as raising the dead, monsters and spawns half Toykind, half Real World lifeform. In the past he appears in most of the events of Army Men II and Army Men: Air Tactics.

Dr. Madd’s appearance in the past and supposedly today

Dr. Madd only appears physically in Army Men II events and in Army Men: Air Tactics. He can be seen on his island, typing away on a computer, only to teleport away when Sarge and his squad opened fire on him. He could also be seen performing different types of experiments on prisoners of war, almost always Greens. Otherwise, his presence is felt throughout other events; he is behind the plastic Zombies that roam areas in certain games, and also created the Anti-Plastrification Serum, the Spider machine and more.

Dr. Madd creations can be seen everywhere, being the most advanced weapons the Real World experiments using biological tissue combined with Toykind plastic, or biological and technological infections of some kind. Toy monster weapons made using Real World found toys were his last seen inventions under Plastro’s regime.

He have a voice like General Plastro (in his first appearances).

Army Men II

Dr. Madd‘s debut into history has him appearing sporadically through this events. He appears identical to the Tan scientists that also appear in this events, albeit with a grey shade. He cannot be killed, and when fired upon, he simply teleports away while cackling. He is behind the creation of the Zombies, as his base of operations is located on an archipelago that hosts a massive machine which creates Zombies via a special plastic mold.

At the end of this events, he somehow manages to gather pieces of Major Mylar and presumably reassembles him. The result of this procedure is never shown however, as Mylar never reappears in history again.

Dr. Madd can be seen subjecting soldiers to a wide variety of cruel methods and experiments, such as swapping Army Men brains with gorillas, tying them to a chair, threatening with a syringe, and presumably strapping them down to a table and letting his Zombies literally tear them apart.

Army Men: Air Tactics

Dr. Madd makes an appearance in Army Men: Air Tactics events. Dr. Madd was experimenting on Green soldiers and combining them with bugs. More of the doctor’s face can be seen during this events; The back of his head, showing he is completely bald and wears glasses.

At the end of this campaign, when Plastro’s volcano base is destroyed, Dr. Madd drives away in a Tan jeep with Plastro as a passenger, driving through a Portal to avoid the volcanic eruption and ending up in an inflatable pool in the Real World. During this old video sequence, there is a brief shot where Dr. Madd‘s face can be seen. But the quality was poor.

Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes 2

Dr. Madd makes no physical appearance in this events (allegedly), but he is behind the creation of the plastrification and anti-plastrification serums. He presumably gives dosages of his serum to Brigitte Bleu so she can free General Plastro, who was abandoned in the Real World. While off doing her mission, Dr. Madd came under siege when Bravo Company, accompanied by Vikki Grimm, assaulted his castle fortress in the infamous and strange Battle of Dr. Madd’s Castle. After a prolonged fighting, the Bravo Company was able to successfully halt the production of the serum.

Vikki in Dr Madd Castle

In N64, PS1 and PS2 event versions, after mission 4 Vikki calls Sarge Hawk on the radio and tells him she found Dr Madd and the serum… but the communication was interrupted by noise and then turns off. This results in Sarge having to rescue Vikki on the mission. But after rescuing her, nothing was said in the reports of the mission about what happened in the middle with Madd, leaving these events unknown.

In the Nintendo 64 version of this events, more or less the same thing happens. Before the “Castle” mission, after Vikki “Graveyard” mission she reaches the door of Madd’s castle and enters it without waiting for Sarge. Vikki tells Sarge on the radio that she found Dr Madd and the serum, but to hurry up because she sees strange creatures lurking around the castle and is immediately surrounded by Zombies. This leads to Sarge going to her rescue. The same thing happens here, we never see what happens in Vikki’s lost time and their never talk about it again.

These events on all the campaign versions imply that Vikki saw Dr. Madd, but we don’t know what happened. We can assume that he was the one who captured Vikki and imprisoned her, since it is unlikely that the intelligence of the zombies is sufficient for such a civilized act. Therefore if he wasn’t, at least he ordered his subordinates to do so and not to kill her, but why not to kill her?. Then escaped from the castle, leaving zombies and soldiers as a welcoming party for Hawk.

Imprisoned by the Grays

Shortly after Sarge’s Heroes 2, the Gray Army finally captured Dr. Madd.

Thanks to this, the Gray Army was able to have its own Vikki Grimm & Sarge Hawk clones thanks to the DNA samples taken by Madd when Vikki was captured in his castle during Sarge’s Heroes 2, and thanks to Brigitte Bleu DNA samples from Sgt. Hawk taken during Portal Runner. This was in exchange for a parole permit for Madd, who was released under extreme surveillance.
